Marmot uses a coating technology to make it’s Precip line of products waterproof and breathable but, as you can see from the picture, it has a durability problem. The white is the coating and it has worn off around the collar revealing the interior side of the blue shell fabric. This Anorak is maybe 6 or 7 years old and has been used no more than a few dozen times (windbreaker and light rain use) but the coating in this area began to show wear early on.
Using a coated shell, instead of one with a more expensive and durable multi-layer laminate, is fine provided it is an appropriate application and you are aware of the limitations. They are light weight and inexpensive for a reason.
Do you think Marmot will replace this? I wouldn’t even ask. I got my $99 bucks worth I think but it is too bad it didn’t hold up because I like it.
