Pima County’s new Eurocopter AS350B3e.
Some of you will remember a couple of years ago a crewmate and friend of mine, Loren Leonberger, was killed flying for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department outside of Tuscon. This is their new helicopter and it is a beauty.
The AS350B3e is sometimes referred to as the high, hot, and heavy model because it is suped up to do the toughtest jobs in the worst conditions. Although most of my air time has been spent in Bell products this bird has proven to be an outstanding multipurpose performer for many agencies around the country so I can’t help but admire it.
PCSD looks to have set this one up right, especially for search and rescue work. Aft mounted searchlight, FLIR unit, cargo hook, chin mirrors, skid steps, sliding aft doors, and a hoist.
The AStar has an open cabin design and all occupants face forward. Note the all glass cockpit instrumentation.
I am sure that Loren would have appreciated this new aircraft for the fine machine that it is and the good work that it will do for the people of that region.
