An iPhone with a satellite connection. It’s as if someone has been reading my mind or scanning my dreams…NSA! NSA! Now if I could just get my hands on one and a service that supports it in North America.
Yea that is a big picture because this is a big deal. If this were a newspaper the headline would be in second coming size print taking up everything above the fold. This rates right up there with lightweight water and nano technology shell layers in my book.
I have been working on an update to a magazine article I wrote a couple of years ago about backcountry communications. There is a lot going on and a slew of new products to address the issue but I have always thought it would be easiest and best to simply slap satellite capability on to the iPhone that I am already carrying.
Well, I never cease to amaze myself in terms of good ideas but I always seem to be just a tad too late with them. Somebody has already thought of and made such a device. It is called a Satsleeve and I caught a glimpse of it this morning on Fox News. Yes, I watch Fox News and I also read the Drudge Report, anyway, here is a promotional video on the product.
Wow! Double wow! It is absolutely what I was looking for but there is a catch. It isn’t available in the United States, in fact, it works on a satellite constellation that doesn’t even cover North America. Major league bummer. What’s worse, I can’t seem to get anybody to tell me when the Satsleeve will be headed our way. Rest assured though that I am working on it like a dog with a bone and will have some more info for you soon cuz I gots to have me one these and I mean right now.
