More then just color sets the new DeLorme inReach Explorer apart from the previous version. It is time to upgrade boys. The orange one is better.
You may remember my report on the DeLorme inReach SE but if you don’t, I liked it very much. I like this new model, the Explorer, even more because it includes basic GPS unit capability that is consistent with the way I use my current favorite GPS from Garmin.
95% of the time I am use my GPS to mark the location of my vehicle before heading out just incase I have trouble finding my way back. Other times I use it to mark a place of interest in the field and occasionally I call in a set of coordinates to emergency services or authorities. Pretty basic stuff and now, in addition to satellite communications and SOS functions, the inReach can do that which just might cause me to retire the trusty little Garmin from my system. That means fewer items in my pack and a lighter load without diminishing capability or safety. Something I am always striving towards.
