When Hydrate & Recover and Energy & Focus from Wilderness Athlete are mixed together in a tall glass of water the drink is called The Super Man and it is a great way to start a long day. Yes, that is a Coronado Village Pizzeria cup and yes, I stole it.
The desert Southwest is hot and dry (116 with 20% humidity today) in the summer but that doesn’t stop us from being outside and doing the things we love to do. Staying active in this extreme environment makes us practical experts in hydration because like the Camelbak slogan says, HYDRATE OR DIE. Well it isn’t always life or death but we know from experience that mentation, fine motor skills, and endurance are significantly effected when you don’t have enough fluids on board.
Our high school football players are required to carry a gallon jug around with them all day and finish it before practice time rolls around. Some drink more than that. Former Phoenix Fire Surgeon Dr. James Schamadan says, your urine output should be regular, significant, and about the color of straw if you are properly hydrated. Our credo on the Mountain Rescue Team was to hydrate early and often. Follow whatever saying gets it through your thick skulls but just know that if you come to play here, you better keep your tank full or you will bonk, hard.
Good clean water is most important but replacing everything that you sweat out makes a big difference in fast recovery.
