Front and back of the Outdoor Research Mutant Mitts. Three fingers are better than two, right?
Heavy duty glove slash mitten hybrids are great for working in cold, sloppy conditions especially when a full gauntlet is called for. I like these Mutant Mitts models from Outdoor Research best because they have a separated index finger. The shells are made out of coated Cordura with Gore-Tex liners so they are very durable and waterproof. The palms have an additional coating called AlpenGrip which makes them even tougher against abrasion slash wear and provides a positive grip when wet.
The 100 weight fleece liners are removable so they can be worn separately, dried or replaced with something thicker for subzero temperatures. There are upper and lower cinch straps for maximum adjustability and idiot cords so you don’t lose one at the worst possible time.
These are not the warmest hand protection I have but they work great for things like riding the quad, snow shoeing, digging a snow cave, or mountaineering in wet, snowy conditions and temps below freezing to say about ten below if you are moving. If you are sitting or it gets colder you are going to have to use a thicker better insulating liner.
You can still find these new but they are now discontinued from OR. The replacement model is called the HIGH CAMP 3 – FINGER MITTS and they feature Primaloft insulation in the shells, heat packet pockets and water resistant leather palms in addition to all the other features.
Personally, I like these because I can use them with my HANZ gloves or thicker fleece liners and I think they are over all beefier than the new models.
Modular design with a removable liner provides flexibility to the situation and decreases drying time if you they get wet from perspiration or water slash snow coming in over the tops.
I am not a huge fan of tall or full gauntlet gloves and mittens because I prefer to run my shell sleeves and cuffs over the tops of the glove for a better seal. However, if you are constantly donning and doffing your mittens or just prefer this style, these are the the ones I use and recommend. I just wish they had a nose wipe.
If you want to see something similar and currently available from the manufacturer, check out the HELI 3-FINGER GLOVE from Hestra. Very nice and offered in a short version also.
