Premium lithium batteries last longer, perform better in cold weather, and are not as heavy as alkaline versions. I prefer Energizer Ultimate Lithium brand.
What do the following have in common? Headlamp, flashlight, strobe light, avalanche beacon, GPS receiver, SPOT Satellite Messenger, ultraviolet light water purifier and FRS/GMRS radios? They are all powered by commercial sized disposable batteries.
The problem is that batteries are heavy, expensive, and have a limited capacity. I use the Energizer Ultimate Lithiums for all of the items listed above because I have found that they last the longest, especially when the temperature drops. They are also significantly lighter than alkaline alternatives.
Yes, they are expensive but their long life means that I have to carry less of them or I don’t have to carry spares which saves me even more weight.
Since I am anal retentive obsessive compulsive I change my batteries out for fresh ones often, even if I have not used the device. I don’t want to get caught short in the field with a device that is not fully capable of giving me full service for the longest possible time. Because I don’t want to waste the old batts I keep a bin in the laundry room marked “USED BATTERIES-USE AT WILL” for the wife and kids to use in their electronics. It is a win-win for everybody.
Don’t scrimp on batteries and don’t carry more weight than is necessary.
