This is pretty straight forward folks. Three proven stoves for three different situations. Feel free to futz around with everything else on the market but most of you come here to see what my research and experience has led me to conclude. Wade Nelson Sorting through the fads and fashion of the outdoor equipment industry to identify and promote the very best wilderness gear for high end recreational users, backcountry professionals and government agencies. Hardcore Outdoor is dedicated to those who won’t or can’t turn back.
These are the ones I carry and recommend.
Snow Peak LiteMax Stove (super light weight, canister stove, for temps above 20 degrees and trips of 3 to 4 days or less)
JetBoil PCS (light weight, self contained, all in one canister stove with cup for temps above 20 degrees and trips longer than 3 to 4 days because of its high efficiency)
MSR XGK-EX (moderate weight, heavy duty, bomb proof reliability, burns pretty much anything flammable, for high altitude, extreme cold, expeditions or international travel)
The only other types to consider are the car camping and alcohol stoves but I am not ready to go there yet.
UPDATE – I am recommending just two stoves now. I have replaced the Snow Peak and Jetboil PCS with the Jetboil Sol Ti Cannister stove, see this article. The MSR XGK-EX is still securely on the list although I am beginning field trials on the MSR WhisperLite Universal because it can burn canister fuel, white gas, kerosene, and unleaded gas.
These are the only two stoves you need. The JetBoil Sol Ti and the MSR XGK-EX. That’s it.
Thanks.
