Cold bore, one shot group, 500 yards.
Friend and The Outdoorsmans customer Jeff Bruggman sent me these pics from his most recent trip to the range. Jeff is preparing for a couple of big hunting trips in the fall and this is what his efforts have produced so far. Pretty damned impressive.
Long range shooting is all the rage now and also a controversial subject but I don’t think anybody has any qualms about a 500 yard shot as long as you have the right equipment, have practiced at that distance and proved to be competent. Too much farther beyond that distance it becomes a different issue and where the real arguments begin.
A new Swarovski Z5 5-25×52 is mounted on top of a Remington 700 AWR chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. The brains of this outfit is a custom etched Ballistic Turret from The Outdoorsmans.
And speaking of the right equipment. Jeff is using a spiffed up variant of my personal favorite rifle, the Remington 700. His optics package of choice is what Brother Cody has been telling me I should use on my next project rifle, the outstanding Swarovski Z5 with a ballistic turret. An Outdoorsmans Ballistic Turret to be more specific. Works like a charm as the target above clearly shows.
It is a very nice rig and I wish Jeff good luck on his trips. I was supposed to go with him but my coaching obligations will not permit it. Bummer for me.
If you are looking to upgrade your hunting set up I encourage you to give The Outdoorsmans a call and talk to Cody. All personal prejudice aside, he has become a practical expert on the subject, will tell you the truth whether you want to hear it or not, and has the inventory to satisfy your needs. Honestly, I don’t know why you would call anybody else for hunting optics. Now, if I could just get him to carry best-in-class soft goods it would be the one-stop-shop for high end hunters.
UPDATE – And so how did it turn out? Did his work and preparation pay off? In a word, yes.
460 yards. 181 inches. Congratulations Jeff, that’s a nice Nevada Muley.
