Hooray!! Finally, a top notch, technical baselayer for those that need FR or fire resistant materials. The Flash Lite FR Hybrid 1/4 Zip top uses an FR version of the outstanding Polartec Power Dry fabric.
High tech base layers for air crews is finally here. When I was an Airborne SAR Tech-EMT on the Sheriff’s helicopter one of the many things that worried me was what I was wearing under my 27P or sack or superman suit or whatever else you like to call the ubiquitous Nomex flight suit. I normally wore a set of nylon bike shorts and a cotton T-shirt but as you know, cotton is a problem when the weather turns cold and you get sweaty and nylon is not good around fire.
Wool or silk were alternatives and as was automobile racing underwear but nothing was designed specifically for my unique gig so I just did the best I could and hoped for the best. What I really wanted was a wicking baselayer with a zip T-neck that wouldn’t melt or burn in a flash fire. My concern was legitimate because in both our birds, Bell 407 and OH-58, my forward facing seat was perched atop the main fuel tank.
While I am not sure how helpful FR clothing would be if you were soaked in fuel (probably not much at all) I do know that our troopers with exposure to IEDs would benefit greatly. And that my friends is precisely why 782 Gear developed this line using the new Polartec Power Dry FR fabric and good on them for doing it. Regular Power Dry is outstanding stuff so my expectations are high. I hope to have a set in my hot little hands soon and, as usual, if I like it I will have more to say about it here.
