GREAT GEAR RECOMMENDATION - Nature Valley Nut Clusters

Best trail snack ever, in my opinion, and pretty good for you too.  The only problem is that they don't come in a bigger size.  5 ounces just isn't enough.  I would suggest a 5 or 10 pound bag!

I am always on the lookout for food products that will work well in the field.  Snacks are especially challenging because they are the small bits of fuel that you use the most to keep the engine running at peak performance and they have to be light, easy to carry, pack some nutritional punch, taste good and be durable.  Your basic Snickers Bar tastes good but is a problem in this part of the country during certain times of the year because of the heat.  Trust me it is no fun to try to eat a completely melted chocolate bar when you need a little pick me up.  It is also a big, goopy mess.

Werther's hard candy, Wilderness Athlete Bars, Kirkland Trail Mix (with or without the M&Ms depending on temperature), cashews, banana chips and Hammer gels work well for me but sometimes even those things don't taste all that appetizing which is a problem because you have to keep the fires stoked when you are working hard in adverse conditions.

My wife came home from the grocery store a couple of months ago with two packages of these Nature Valley Granola Nut Clusters and they sat in the cupboard for about a week before anybody even opened them but they were gone in less than a day once they were.  Since then, she has to hide them in the house with all the care and innovation of a drug smuggler because we go through them like hot cakes.  In fact, hot cakes don't go that fast around here.  They are that good and I find that I like them even when I don't feel like eating anything but know that I should.  They also carry very well in all field conditions and are realtively quiet.

"Cashews, pecans, peanuts, granola and a touch of honey" is what it says on the front of the resealable foil package.  They shouldn't bother with the resealable package though, they won't last long enough to go stale.

Anyway, check them out.  I think you will like them and appreciate how they work for you in the boonies.  Certainly not a meal but sure hits the spot in between times and that is a good thing.

Thanks.
