GREAT GEAR RECOMMENDATION - Granger's One Step Wash & Waterproofer

Restore your shell gears original water repellency and clean it all in one step.  One bottle treats four garments.

Your shell gear is your armour.  It is what protects the insulation and base layers underneath so they can do their job which is to keep you dry and warm.  However, as good as modern fabrics and technologies are they require periodic maintenance.

The first order of business when giving your gear a tune up is to clean it properly to remove dirt, contaminants and odor.  Second, is to restore the DWR or Durable Water Repellant coating to like new condition which is like putting a fresh coat of wax on your car.  The DWR is what makes the water bead up and run off so the exterior fabric does not become saturated.  Granger's One Step Wash & Waterproofer does exactly what its name suggests.  It is as simple as doing a load of laundry and Granger's is recommended by Gore-Tex and eVent.

By the way, most of the complaints I hear about waterproof vapor permeable or "breathable" products like Gore-Tex or eVent can be traced back to something called to wetting out.  Wetting out isn't a failure, unless the film is damaged, of the shells ability to keep water out, it is a feeling the wearer experiences when the exterior fabric of the shell becomes saturated.  Retreating your shell regularly so that the DWR performs as designed helps eliminate the problem .

I suggest doing this as a matter of course once a year or more often if your shells have had excessive exposure to contaminants such as smoke.  How much is excessive?  I don't know which is why I suggest treating once a year.

The shell is a critical part of the layering system and it could mean the difference between success and failure or life and death.  Take care of your stuff so it will take care of you and last longer.

Thanks.
