Raw Notes From The Field

i spent most of the day hiking an area i have not been in for a while but know all too well for tragic reasons.  pulled too many bodies out of this place.  kind of spooky

my gear list included-lorpen socks, hanwag cheyenne gtx boots, arborwear original treeclimbers pants, yates uniform rappel belt, carhartt work dry long sleeve t-shirt, black diamond trekking pole, ray ban sunglasses, hardcore outdoor flex-fit cap and a mystery ranch nice crew cab backpack loaded (34lbs including a 100oz camelbak water beast bladder and two 32oz nalgene cantenes) for a three day scout
  • really like these arborwear pants.  double front thickness like my carhartt dungarees but with a looser fit and a full diamond gusset crotch for easy hiking and scrambling.  they only have one side thigh pocket though and it is too small.  wish they had full cargo pockets on each leg.  these will be nice for busting brush and hunting quail though
  • becoming quite attached to the crew cab.  as i said it is not a perfect pocket set for hunting but it sure rides nice, pun intended, regardless of the load weight and it is uber adaptable to the task at hand.  have had gotten a bunch of questions about it
  • need to carry an extra bandana and keep it in my msr titan kettle to keep the stove from banging around in it
  • now carrying a blaze orange zip t-neck base layer in my pack as a spare and to serve as a visual marker in the daytime if i need it
  • have been seeing a lot of big coues buck pictures on the hunting websites lately.  wonder if more giants are being killed or just more people getting drawn into the points 'n pics rat race.  the lure of internet fame and bragging rights is strong, intoxicating and boy do the fangs come out.  hard for some to remember why we really do this.  true colors folks, true colors.  i am going the opposite way.  i won't talk about points or score on this website again
  • somebody was telling my brother that he knows we like to do the bataan death march thing and all but he likes to roll out of camp a little later, jump on the quad and ride to where he's going.  that's cool.  to each his own as long as your quad ride doesn't blow my stalk which has happen several times to me.  it isn't about making things hard or uncomfortable on purpose.  it is about the challenge of going deep, getting away from the crowd and feeling the solitude of these places.  that is what i dig plus i believe being able to bivy where ever i am when the sun goes down puts me in a better hunting position when the sun comes back up.  and lightweight doesn't mean i can't carry heavier loads it just means i can go faster, longer, farther and quieter.  truth is most people can't, for a lot of different reasons, do what we do and i like that
  • i have been regularly using a number of the wilderness athlete products for the past couple of months and not only losing weight but feeling pretty freaking good in the process.  i mix and match but they all seem to work as advertised and...there is more good stuff on the way.  maybe we can talk the boys into doing some single serving size packets of the powders
  • i am thinking that between the wilderness athlete bars, gels and my famous top raman concoctions i have just about settled on the perfect field menu.  if the weather is mild i could easily make do on just the bars
  • love love love my little vortex 6x32 binos but i need to find a better way to carry them while i am wearing a pack.  the strap isn't very comfortable this way
  • it is my opinion that cpas, jds, mbas and the ascension of the hr department have just about ruined the work environment in america.  "it's not personal, its just business" breaks the golden rule and is just a poor excuse for bad manners.  can an honest, hard working man make a good living anymore?  where?  alaska?  new zealand?  mumbai?
